On 9 October 2009, the Estonian National Defence College and the Martens Society will hold a conference titled “Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on the Law of Armed Conflict”. The first part of the conference seeks to connect the historical development of the law of armed conflict with contemporary problems, whereas the second part will focus on select issues of interest to Estonia at the moment. As part of the conference, Dr Arthur Eyffinger, a renowned legal historian, will deliver the Fourth Martens Memorial Lecture, addressing the role of the Estonian-born diplomat and international law scholar Friedrich Martens in the developments of the law of armed conflict.

The Martens Society publishes annually a bilingual (Estonian and English) academic journal Acta Societatis Martensis. The journal specialises in international law and relations.
The Editorial Board awaits contributions to the fourth volume of the journal. The upcoming volume will include a symposium on human rights in the wider meaning of the notion. Such choice of theme is due to the fact year 2008 marked the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the epoch-making Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As such, the Editorial Board especially looks forward to receiving contributions discussing the development and state of human rights doctrine and practice in this particular historical context. Bearing in mind the broadness of Acta’s scope, the Editorial Board invites also contributions concentrating on the political dimension of human rights (including those discussing the relationship between human rights and international and national security) and those addressing application of human rights in the context of (armed) conflicts.
